Step by step: how to request an extension yourself

Want to request an extension yourself online via the Tax Authority website? Follow these 10 steps:

1. Go to mijn.belastingdienst.nl

2. Log in with your DigiD

3. Click on 'Income tax'

4. Click on 'Tax year 2024'

5. Click on the link 'Request an extension for my income tax return'

6. Tick the box: 'I am requesting an extension until 1 September 2025'

7. Click 'Agree' and then click 'Next'

8. Check your details and click 'Proceed to signing'

9. Click 'Sign' and then 'Submit'

10. Save and close. Keep a copy of the extension request.

🎉 Done! You have now requested an extension. Within 14 days you will receive a confirmation from the Tax Authority.

Do you file your return before 1 April 2025? Then you pay no tax interest.
Do you request an extension and pay later? Then tax interest may be charged.
