As an entrepreneur in the Netherlands you need to pay income tax every year. This can be quite a challenge, especially if you do not know exactly which rules and deductions apply. Fortunately there are ways to handle your tax return smartly and make use of tax benefits. In this article we explain what income tax is, how it works for entrepreneurs and what to watch out for when filing your return.

What is income tax for entrepreneurs?

In the Netherlands everyone pays income tax on the income they earn. For entrepreneurs, the profit from their business is taxed in Box 1 (income from work and home). This means you pay tax on your profit, after deducting business costs and certain tax benefits.

As a self-employed professional or sole trader, your profit is treated as personal income. You therefore pay income tax rather than corporate tax, as is the case with a BV.

How do you calculate income tax?

Income tax in Box 1 is progressive: the more profit you make, the higher the tax percentage. The following rates apply for income tax 2024:
✔ Band 1: Up to €75,518 you pay 36.97% tax.
✔ Band 2: For everything above €75,518 you pay 49.50% tax.

Fortunately there are various deductions and schemes that ensure you pay less tax.

Important deductions for entrepreneurs

To encourage entrepreneurs, various deductions are available. The most important ones are:

1. Self-employment deduction

If you spend at least 1,225 hours per year on your business, you are entitled to the self-employment deduction. €3,750 is deducted from your profit, reducing the tax you pay.

2. Starter's deduction

Are you a starting entrepreneur? Then in the first three years you may apply additional self-employment deduction. This helps to reduce the tax burden during the start-up phase.

3. SME profit exemption

Every entrepreneur automatically receives an SME profit exemption of 13.31% of the profit. This means you only pay tax on 86% of your profit.

4. Deductible costs

Many costs you incur for your business are deductible. Think of:
✔ Business travel costs (excluding commuting)
✔ Costs for your website and software
✔ Office supplies and equipment
✔ Phone costs for business calls

Note: costs must have a business character to be deductible.

How and when do you file your return?
You file your income tax return annually via Mijn Belastingdienst. The deadline is 1 May, but you can request an extension via Mijn Belastingdienst if you need more time.

Step-by-step plan for your return:
1. Gather all financial data: make sure you have a clear overview of all your income and business costs.
2. Check which deductions you may apply.
3. File your return via Mijn Belastingdienst and fill in all details correctly.
4. Check your provisional assessment and request an adjustment if your income changes significantly.

Check which deductions you may apply.

Common mistakes when filing

Many entrepreneurs make mistakes when filing their return. The most common pitfalls are:

❌ Not keeping sufficient proof for business costs.
❌ Mixing up private and business expenses.
❌ Forgetting to apply all deductions.
❌ Filing too late, which can lead to fines.

By keeping good records and preparing properly, you avoid these mistakes.
